SuperSonico was held at the Hollywood Palladium with over 15 artists from Columbia to NY to our own backyard. A mix of latin alternative sounds of old and new.
While many in the attendance waited in anticipation of seeing Aterciopelados from Colombia, many had expectations of any of the new artists to showcase their stage presence.
The second stage was actually up on the balcony and featured mainly djs, and electronic artists such as  Alex Anwandter, Dengue Dengue, Dengue, and Prayers

Alex Anwandter, is a singer/producer from Chile who sang and swayed while acknowledging the crowd below. Many festival goers below bopped to his nu-disco sound especially to his song “Còmo Puedes Vivir Contigo Mismo? from his last album “Rebeldes” which was released in 2012 but new to me.

The popularity of tropical music from Cumbia to Samba heated up many Los Angeles clubs this past summer including La Cita, Los Globos, & Club Bahia. Several of the DJs and Electronic acts featured tropical sounds mixed with electronic beats and remixes. Dengue Dengue Dengue (Peru), Chancha Via Circuito (Argentina), Calentura DJ’s  Subsuelo + LNL (Los Angeles), and Mr. Pauer (Miami).

While electronic acts and djs were a in force at Supersonico, Latin Alternative bands from Colombia to Los Angeles added to the festive scene. Astro from Santiago, Chile recently released “Chicos de la Luz” in July and their latest single “Caribbean” was part of their set of upbeat rock. With a bit of sound issues Hello Seahorse! began their set with their newest single “Animal“. Vocalist, Denise Guitiérrez lead the Mexico City band with their indie pop. Now with almost 10 years together, many fans sang along with their older songs. Mariachi El Bronx contemporary mariachi sound continues to win over new fans, even fans of their original punk outfit El Bronx.

Two female singers in particular showed a wide range of music styles at this festival. While actress/singer Ximena Sariñana from Mexico continues to expand here musical sound from pop, jazz, to electronic; she has received critical acclaim and grammy nominations on many of here albums both in her native Mexico and in the United States as well. Her last release “No todo lo puedes dar” from 2014 continues to impress. Rapper/lyricist Mala Rodriguez from Spain has worked with top Spanish producers to bring her rap style since 2002. With strong bass beats she had the hand raising party crowd going during her set which included her latest song Mátale.

The most popular acts Chicano Batman, Kinky, Prayers & Aterciopelados all rocked the crowd. Chicano Batman started their set with their newest release “Black Lipstick“. Their psychedelic rock fusion with chicano soul continues grow new fans. One of the few Chicano rock bands in a mostly rock/pop en español show. Kinky played hit after hit including the crowd favorite Mas, not much new stuff from them during this short set.  Prayers performed on the mini top balcony stage but the crowd was curious to see what the cholo goth buzz was about. Singer Rafa Reyes commandeered the crowd with song after song from his new release “Young Gods“, and they didn’t disappoint. Aterciopelados closed the show with Andrea and Hector sharing stories about writing songs for Cafe Tacuba and their children in their long journey. They said new music to come in 2016.
